Community, Education and Health

Marangu is one of the areas we focus on community development within the educational sector and health sector. It is a small delightful community situated in Mt. Kilimanjaro. Mt. Kilimanjaro is one of the most majestic mountain in the world and the highest point in Africa.

Mengeni Teacher’s Resource Center
This project seeks to improve the quality of the primary school teaching in the rural area of the Mt. Kilimanjaro region by providing infrastructure support to a Teachers Resource Center that has 23 primary schools under its jurisdiction. The goal of the project will be to improve quality of the teachers and teaching methods. The first phase will focus on strengthening the capacities of the Center to improve the quality of the teachers. The second phase will then extend to improving the teaching infrastructures and facilities in the 23 schools.

Volunteer will undertake the development of the Teachers Resource Center, plan and perform workshops, acquire information to increase the instructor’s skills; in turn they will teach the primary school teachers how to utilize the center to improve their expertise.

Accommodations are available and will be arrange by Winds of Africa according to the number and needs of volunteers.

The Marangu Hospital is one of the locations our volunteers may select to help. Our goal is to expand and raise the profile of the hospital and make it able to compete in the Moshi - Arusha market through professional advice and service from professional volunteers. We also hope to gain input as to what is best for the hospital and particularly if some specialty should be considered that would be beneficial to the entire region including Moshi town which has medical facilities.

Moshi is about 45 minutes from Marangu and is the closest town of any size. Moshi is an old agriculture and coffee plantation town.

Marangu Hospital also needs to improve its nursing quality and efficiency. The hospital has two guesthouses with three bedrooms each. There are also comfortable houses nearby that we rent when we require extra space. The hospital also provides transportation during the volunteers stay in case the volunteer occasionally needs to go into Moshi Town.

Marangu Hospital is an 80-bed community hospital owned by the Lutheran Church, Northern Diocese. It also services 4 small health centers scattered within a radius of 50 km. The catchments population around the hospital is something in the range of 30,000.

Marangu Tourist and Community Development Program:

Mt. Kilimanjaro is known for being the tallest free standing mountain in the world. It reveals a majestic glacier peak above the clouds for the local communities and travelers to view and be inspired daily. This peak fascinates the imagination and many people from all over the world come to challenge themselves by climbing to reach its peak; many have conquered and many have turned away in defeat. It is a powerful mountain. It’s resources feed the land and the people that inhabit its region.

The community of Marangu and the surround villages are interested in creating a location for the local public and visitors to explore the mountain with a variety of actives, social events, promoting it as a family destination for vacationers.

This position gives the volunteer the chance to work in partnership with local people in the rural areas of Kilimanjaro. The population will vary in income, development and education. The key is to assist the communities toward establishing a base to increase resources for community development in such areas as education, business and community activities.

You will bring to this project a keen outlook and sense of creativity, testing your skills daily, exploring the region and its resources.

The volunteer will either live with a local family or in a local guest house within walking distance to all community business. Transportation will be available when it is necessary for long distance travel to perform your duties.

Transportation to Moshi or surrounding areas can be reached by local transportation at a reasonable cost.
